The guide

How It Works

Everything about bidding, buying, paying and consigning at Dugout Auctions, in plain English.

For bidders

  1. Step 1

    Create a free account

Anyone in the United States can sign up and bid. Confirm your email address from the email we send, and you can bid straight away. Create your account.

  2. Step 2

    Find what you collect

Browse the auctions by sport, category, era, authenticator, player or price, and sort by what closes first. Watch a lot to get a reminder before it closes, or save a search and we'll email you when new lots match it.

  3. Step 3

    Bid with a maximum

Enter the most you're willing to pay. We bid for you, one step at a time, only as much as it takes to keep you in the lead, up to your maximum. Nobody else sees your maximum. If two bidders set the same maximum, the one who set it first wins.

Each bid has to raise the price by at least the increment for its price range:

Current priceEach bid raises it by at least
    Under $100$5
    $100 to under $500$10
    $500 to under $1,000$25
    $1,000 to under $2,500$50
    $2,500 to under $5,000$100
    $5,000 to under $10,000$250
    $10,000 and up$500
  4. Step 4

    Watch the close

Every lot closes at its set time, on our clock. A bid in the last 3 minutes adds 3 minutes to the clock, so everyone gets a fair chance to answer it.

Some lots have a hidden reserve: the lowest price the seller will accept. The lot shows "Reserve not met" until the bidding reaches it, and it only sells if it does.

  5. Step 5

Or buy it now, or make an offer

Lots with a Buy It Now price can be bought outright. On an auction lot, Buy It Now disappears as soon as the first bid is placed. Lots marked "Open to offers" take offers: name your price, and we accept, decline or counter. Offers expire after 48 hours.

  6. Step 6

    Win and pay

When you win, your invoice arrives by email. You pay the winning price plus shipping, packaging and sales tax, with no buyer's premium. Pay within 7 days with PayPal. Everything you win before paying goes on one invoice, with one shipping charge.

  7. Step 7

    We pack and ship

We pack your lots carefully and ship them with tracking to your verified address in California. You can bid from any state; you'll just need a shipping address in California at checkout. Shipping and payment details.

For consignors

  • 17%commission, from your payout
  • $0buyer's premium
  • 1, 3, 5 and 7 daysauction lengths
  1. Step 1

    Tell us about your items

Send us photos and what you know: the player, the year and any authentication, from the Consign With Us page. Several items can go in one submission.

  2. Step 2

    We take a look

We review each item and email you. If we'd like to sell it, we tell you where to send it. You can follow every item in My Account.

  3. Step 3

    Send it in

When it arrives we mark it received, then photograph it, write it up with its certificate and list it.

  4. Step 4

    Collectors bid

Your item goes up in a timed auction of 1, 3, 5 and 7 days, or at a Buy It Now price. You can watch the bidding as it happens.

  5. Step 5

    You get paid

Once your buyer has paid, you receive the hammer price less our 17% commission, with a statement showing every lot on it. Buyers never pay a premium on top.

Questions

Is there a buyer's premium?

No. You pay the winning price plus shipping, packaging and sales tax. Our commission comes out of the consignor's side, never yours.

Can I bid if I don't live in California?

Yes. Bidders from any US state can register, bid and win. Winning lots ship only to a verified address in California, so you'll need one at checkout.

What is a maximum bid?

The most you're willing to pay. We bid on your behalf one increment at a time, only as far as needed, and keep your maximum private.

Why did the closing time move?

A bid came in during the last 3 minutes, which adds 3 minutes to the clock. It stops anyone winning with a last-second snipe.

What does "Reserve not met" mean?

The bidding hasn't reached the lowest price the seller will accept yet. If it doesn't by the close, the lot doesn't sell.

Can I take back a bid?

Bids are binding, so please check the amount before you confirm. If you've made a mistake, contact us straight away.

When do I have to pay?

Within 7 days of your invoice. We'll send a reminder before it's due.

How is shipping worked out?

One charge per invoice, based on the package types of the lots on it. Every lot page shows what you'd pay in all before you bid. See the rates.

Are the items authentic?

Authenticated lots show who authenticated them and the certificate number, with a link to check it where the authenticator offers one. More about authentication.
